Infrastructure Database Support – Oracle

An overview of the role

Job Title: L2/L3 Oracle Database Admin
Discipline Managed Services, IMS
Business Unit: DSS    
Location Highlands
Working Pattern: Full Time (will involve some out of hours work)

Role Requirements:

1.    Strong Database Administration skills.
2.    Professional experience with Oracle, MSSQL, PostgreSQL and MySQL
3.    Cloud experience, ideally.
4.    A professional track record with at least two DB technologies
 

Why this role

Database Administration to include:
⦁    Focusing on scalability, integrity, performance, availability, security, monitoring and troubleshooting of core DB clusters
⦁    Owning core database clusters in Production as well as on a wide range of technologies
⦁    Reporting into the Operations Manager and working alongside the Senior DBA 
⦁    Space Management
⦁    Oracle schema object sizing.
⦁    Monitor data block organisation.
⦁    Monitor physical storage and contention.
⦁    Monitor tablespace utilization
⦁    Performance monitoring & tuning of production databases to include:
⦁    Memory usage.
⦁    Physical I/O tuning. 
⦁    Lock monitoring.
⦁    Database resource utilization.
⦁    Checks will be performed by Oracle DBA’s include
⦁    Alert log.
⦁    Backup status.
⦁    Database free space.
⦁    Backup of Control files for database recovery
⦁    Performance tuning ratios
⦁    Check Invalid objects
⦁    Check Listener process
⦁    System House keeping, to include:
⦁    Monitor build-up of trace files.
⦁    Monitor growth of alert logs.
⦁    Purge log and trace files, which are no longer required.
⦁    Database Monitoring
⦁    Cache (Buffer Cache, Library Cache, Dictionary Cache)  hit/miss ratios
⦁    Backup & recovery to include:
⦁    Point in time database recovery, using on-line redo logs.
⦁    Provide advice during database restoration following a crash or media failure.
⦁    Monitor Archive log retention period for database recoverability and highlight issues / limitations.
⦁    Ensure database changes are reflected into the backup strategy.
⦁    Ensure consistent backups are taken according to the services backup schedule. These may include:
⦁    Physical Hot backups
⦁    Physical Cold backups
⦁    Logical exports.

⦁    Oracle upgrades to include:

⦁    Apply approved Oracle Software releases as required.
⦁    Apply approved Oracle Software patches as required.
⦁    Database structure amendments to Production, Test and development databases for major releases.

⦁    Miscellaneous

⦁    Shared pool usage
⦁    Customized DBMS_JOBS running
⦁    Logical I/O on the database
⦁    SAR on the database server
⦁    Locks on the database
⦁    Sessions and session queries 
⦁    Monitor database availability issues
⦁    Monitor on-line and archived log file usage
⦁    Monitor roll-back segment usage
⦁    EARS call handling for Oracle DBA team
⦁    Change handling for Oracle DBA team
⦁    Participate in implementation planning
⦁    Export & Import data between production and test instances as required

⦁    Document, review and maintain the SQL Server support procedures
