We asked Karina Heikkila, who has complex post-traumatic stress disorder, for a personal view. Here, Karina speaks directly about her experiences of working at Capgemini, and how we can make the workplace a more inclusive, understanding environment.<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Karina-Heikkila.webp?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697229\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The first thing to say is that I don\u2019t think of myself as having a disability. I see myself as living with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD). It is a characteristic of the way my brain and body function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On a practical level, it means that feeling safe is very important to me. Safety is not something I seek consciously, but my body will react to situations where I don\u2019t feel safe. So, you can say I\u2019m super sensitive to external stimuli. This means that in my working environment at Capgemini \u2013 where I spend a third of my time \u2013 safety, of all kinds, is very important.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-place-of-safety\"><strong>A place of safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capgemini_Inside-Stories_Neurodiversity_Time-to-listen_1.webp?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697225\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Creating an environment where neurodivergent employees feel included and safe is key to maximizing the value of a diverse workplace.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I came to Capgemini two years ago after pursuing a short legal career. Before that, I spent 25 years in various IT roles. I\u2019m now an associate director in Melbourne, Australia, and work as a proposal architect. Outside of this, I\u2019m chair of our neurodiversity community here in Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I arrived at Capgemini, I found the environment to be generally very welcoming and understanding. For example, my manager is aware of my c-PTSD and helps me to avoid taking on too much work \u2013&nbsp;which is something I know I\u2019m liable to do in order to feel safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Difficult impacts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes, my c-PTSD can cause an immediate onset of extreme anxiety and brain fog, and can temporarily undermine my confidence. C-PTSD has been a characteristic of my beingness since I was a child, although I was only diagnosed in my 30s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although I\u2019ve <em>s<\/em>ought help with my condition and am proactive in its management, I can\u2019t \u201ccure\u201d myself with techniques and medications. With c-PTSD, my reactions were \u201cwritten\u201d in my brain and body as I developed into adulthood. So, it is truly a part of &#8216;me&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Proud to be diverse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capgemini_Inside-Stories_Neurodiversity_Time-to-listen_2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697226\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Given the right resources, people who identify as neurodivergent often find rewarding careers and thrive in the tech industry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In fact, my living with c-PTSD is something I\u2019ve grown to appreciate and be proud of. For example, I\u2019m highly attuned to how others interact with each other \u2013&nbsp;something I have in common with many of my wonderful neurodivergent colleagues at Capgemini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This includes people who identify with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, and Asperger\u2019s syndrome, among other cohorts. Many of us, even if we are not neurodivergent, have similar sensitivities that may trigger different responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I firmly believe that neurodivergent people truly add value to organizations. Fundamentally, if our experiences help to create a culture in which it\u2019s safe to speak out \u2013 and if our ways-of-working needs are met \u2013 it will benefit everyone in the organization from a mental health perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is critical because, at any given time,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/health\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20%<\/a>&nbsp;of the population is suffering from some form of mental health issue. In fact,&nbsp;12%&nbsp;of us will suffer from some form of PTSD in our lifetimes, and the condition does not switch itself off just because we are at work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Care and attention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capgemini_Inside-Stories_Neurodiversity_Time-to-listen_3.webp?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697227\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Leadership is about understanding all aspects of what it means to be in a diverse workplace and recognizing the value it provides.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What conclusions are we to draw from these numbers? For me, they highlight the importance of being mindful&nbsp;towards our colleagues. If we are to thrive as individuals, teams, and as an organization, we should make embracing and&nbsp;accommodating of differences a shared responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We must really live our values of respect \u2013 of being sensitive to different ways of being. This takes time, learning, patience, and practice. Organizations require strong, truly diverse leadership that embraces different and more empathetic ways of interacting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Improving the workplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Employers who want to improve workplaces for people like me should ensure that everyone in the organization continues to learn about different characteristics and disabilities \u2013 those that are in plain sight and those that are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In practical terms, we should reconsider how we assign tasks and job roles, and how we can sensitively recruit different types of people with different needs. Only then can we become truly diverse as an organization and benefit from all the power that brings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reaping the benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No matter what cohort we belong to, we must all feel safe in expressing what we need in order to flourish.
