Here, Ron Tolido, Capgemini\u2019s global chief innovation officer, Insights &amp; Data, helps us understand why this is the perfect metaphor to describe the converging relationship between business and technology.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the physical manifestation of our inner selves. They take the form of the animal that best reflects our personality \u2013 crow, monkey, panther, or any other. They communicate with us almost telepathically. They are joined to us for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are<em>&nbsp;Daemons<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to the fantasy world of Philip Pullman, author of the&nbsp;<em>His Dark Materials&nbsp;<\/em>trilogy. Of all the features of his rich, engrossing novels, Daemons are among the most distinctive and memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Daemons can be interpreted as a powerful metaphor that goes beyond the world of fiction, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/experts\/artificial-intelligence\/ron-tolido\/\">Ron<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-metaphor-for-technology-convergence\"><strong>A metaphor for technology convergence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Ron-Tolido.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"left\">\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Philip Pullman\u2019s books, humans and Daemons are inseparably bonded together. They live, think, evolve, and experience life together,\u201d says Ron. \u201cFor me, this is the perfect metaphor for the relationship between business and technology in today\u2019s digital world. We used to talk about \u2018alignment.\u2019 This implies two entities that are close, but separate. However, today, that relationship is so deeply entwined and interdependent that you can\u2019t imagine the one without the other. There is no \u2018separate\u2019 any longer \u2013&nbsp;technology is&nbsp;<em>inseparable<\/em>&nbsp;from business life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The implication of this trend is a broader and deeper application of technology in all areas \u2013 from data, apps and infrastructure, to AI, process automation, and collaboration. \u201cThis inevitably brings about more complexity,\u201d says Ron. \u201cAnd yet, the more people who need to use technology, the simpler it has to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of this, therefore, is a paradox. \u201cTo counteract the increasing complexity, we see a pressing need for greater&nbsp;<em>simplicity<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 the most important dynamic for technology businesses today, and the reason we chose to focus on it in our TechnoVision 2020 report,\u201d says Ron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-quest-for-simplicity-nbsp\"><strong>A quest for simplicity&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/nicolet_0603-e1521127485678.jpg?w=278\" alt=\"\" class=\"right\">\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick Nicolet, Capgemini\u2019s executive board member and Group CTO, explains that TechnoVision 2020\u2019s focus on simplicity reflects \u201ca recognition that a key goal of technology is to make the lives of consumers, colleagues, and citizens easier in a world where we can be inundated by data.\u201d Succeeding, he says, \u201crequires mastery of complex and fast-changing innovations, to make the right technology choices, and an understanding of the underlying implications and complications.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ron, these complications are often tensions between ease of use on the one hand, and oversimplification on the other. \u201cFor example, we\u2019re seeing the first signs of \u2018psychic\u2019 technology that fulfills our preferences without our having to express them, while automated processes are increasingly able to operate independently from human control. But we must be able to trust these technologies, and that means trusting the highly complex thinking that went into them,\u201d says Ron.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a human level, the demand for simplicity is the natural consequence of a world in which consumers are used to seamless technology interfaces. \u201cToday, we won\u2019t accept technology unless it fits us like a glove,\u201d says Ron. \u201cWe expect simple messages, instant action, and zero friction. Business technology must be usable for anyone, whatever their level of technical competence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-workplace-in-a-time-of-crisis\"><strong>The workplace in a time of crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 crisis has underlined just how much we rely on technology, Ron believes. \u201cMany of us are working from home, connecting to our workplaces through all-but seamless virtual tools that were just a dream only a few years ago. Without these, business would literally be unthinkable right now. Even our relationships with our family and friends now hinge on technology. Admittedly, these dynamics were already in play \u2013 but the current situation has fitted them with a rocket booster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, in the current context, where preventing viral transmission is paramount, frictionless contact-free experiences are more important than ever. \u201cWhere simplicity would initially have aimed to create a&nbsp;comfortable&nbsp;experience, the same technologies and approaches will now aim to create a&nbsp;safe experience, too. That\u2019s very quickly become a prerequisite for us to feel comfortable using technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our personal relationship with technology has become so close that we can turn to Philip Pullman once again. \u201cThe human-Daemon metaphor works in this way too,\u201d says Ron. \u201cTechnology\u2013business and people-technology \u2013 these are different facets of the same dynamic. We\u2019re all seeking a simple way of working and interacting with technology. That\u2019s our reality today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TechnoVision 2020 report introduces a set of 37 technology business trends across seven key areas, tackling the theme of simplicity and mapped onto different categories of enterprise system.
