sustainable<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<p>\u201cAs innovation experts, our job is to create innovative solutions to real-world challenges,\u201d says Capgemini senior business analyst Thomas Grohando. \u201cIt\u2019s about exploring new ideas, perspectives and technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Photo-Thomas-edited.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1111291\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:350px;height:350px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One recent project for Thomas and his team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/in-en\/about-us\/who-we-are\/innovation-ecosystem\/applied-innovation-exchange\/\">Capgemini\u2019s Applied Innovation Exchange (AIE)<\/a> in France, has been working with maritime technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/beyond-the-sea.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beyond the Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge? Discovering a way to decarbonize maritime transport, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by using the force of the wind to propel ships that are usually powered by fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe project reflects our mission at AIE,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are a global platform for innovation, and its where we bring together a network of experts, start-up businesses and partners, so working with Beyond the Sea is perfect for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of sustainability, it\u2019s also a vital challenge. Maritime transportation represents about three per cent&nbsp;of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions, which makes shipping the sixth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the Sea aims to reduce a ship\u2019s emissions by an average of 20 per cent, rising to 30 per cent, then 40,&nbsp;in the near future&nbsp;. And while \u2018wind power\u2019 might indicate a return to a golden age of sailing ships, its solution is a hi-tech \u2018kite\u2019 that can be used to propel current and ships of the future, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving towards a prototype production version of the kite, however, requires a solid IT environment, which is where Capgemini\u2019s expertise came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt AIE we connect&nbsp;with local businesses and the local ecosystem of start-ups&nbsp;and business incubator projects to see where we can help them,\u201d says Thomas. \u201cWe also love to find projects where we can develop technology with a sustainability angle. Beyond the Sea, which is based in the Bay of Arcachon, near Bordeaux, is a great example of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teams-for-innovation\"><strong>Teams for innovation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy role is to coordinate all the different teams&nbsp;involved in the project,\u201d Thomas continues. \u201cThat means bringing together our engineering team, innovation team and development team, to make sure we\u2019re delivering against Beyond the Sea\u2019s vision and goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Photo-Damien.png?w=250\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1102046\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:350px;height:350px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the project, a Capgemini research and innovation&nbsp;team worked on how sensors could detect and monitor a kite\u2019s precise position from space and model it in 3D. Meanwhile, Thomas\u2019s team developed technology that makes use of AI to detect flight patterns in real time, ensuring optimal stability and performance of the kite. The teams used mathematical flight and piloting models&nbsp;and a human-machine interface (HMI), alongside data from Beyond the Sea, to explore the most effective ways to create the kite simulation technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simulator provides a safe and flexible environment for pilots to learn to operate them, allowing for training without the constraints and costs associated with real-world testing \u2013&nbsp;a point underlined by Capgemini\u2019s partners at Beyond the Sea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOptimizing the quality and&nbsp;flight efficiency&nbsp;of our kites is one of our main focuses in the pursuit of performance and reliability. Ensuring optimal control during all flight phases is essential,\u201d says Marc Thienpont, CEO of Beyond the Sea. Kite control engineer at the company Tanguy L\u00e9au, adds some extra detail about how the kite works:<br><br>\u201cOur autopilot adjusts in real time to wind conditions, making the most of the boat\u2019s flight window to maximize traction. In other words, depending on the wind angle, it adjusts the kite\u2019s path to increase power and improve the vessel\u2019s progress. The optimization of this autopilot through AI is one of the key aspects of our partnership with Capgemini.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That optimization process begins with data.<br><br>\u201cGiven the value of the kites, a virtual simulation was crucial,\u201d says Damien Gavlak, a developer at Capgemini and a technical lead on the project&nbsp;. \u201cBut to develop a simulator, we needed a lot of data. We had to ensure that we could simulate a wide range of environmental conditions so that pilots would be fully prepared to control the kites effectively in real-world situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/7.jpg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1102048\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo courtesy &#8211; Beyond the sea<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe needed data about the speed of the wind, the speed of the boat and kite, the pressure on the cable that attaches the kite to the ship, the air pressure, the specific physical aspects of the kite, and how it responds when the pilot sends it a command. There are so many variables. However, not all of the data is useful. We need to find the good data that really helps us solve the problem. This process is very incremental.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this data, Thomas says, was needed to create the simulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe teams have done an incredible job, and we&#8217;re now at the stage where we have a prototype version of the simulator and want to move on to a more mature tool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solving-sustainability-challenges\"><strong>Solving sustainability challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Beyond the Sea asked the teams to solve a very specific challenge, Thomas says it is only one example of many different types of client who are asking Capgemini to build sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a major topic,\u201d he says, \u201cprojects like this help us demonstrate that we have the experience and tools to support companies that develop great sustainable technologies\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always really interesting to work on projects like this because the potential impact is very real. As an IT company, we can also help clients by creating solutions that can be deployed at scale. It\u2019s not always about imagining the solution \u00ad\u2013 for example, the kite. It\u2019s about deploying it to make as big a positive impact as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/8.jpg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1102050\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo courtesy &#8211; Beyond the sea<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Damien says that it is the breadth of skills and experience across the teams that make projects a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have experienced engineers that worked on how the sensors detected the kite\u2019s position, but they needed our team\u2019s help to help Beyond the Sea manage all the data collected by their system.&nbsp;Everyone has to work together \u2013 and that\u2019s part of the culture here at Capgemini. When we do that, we start to build solutions that can really have an impact on sustainability. It\u2019s good to know you are working on something that could have a really positive ecological impact on the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding the right combination of expertise is also one way to summarize Thomas\u2019s, Damien\u2019s, and their teams\u2019 work with Beyond the Sea, which brings together the latest technology with the power of natural resources.
