Is Bi-Modal or Two-Speed IT still Relevant for Enterprise by Capgemini – 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm

Back in 2014, Gartner came up with the term “Bi-Modal” – with Mode 1 referring to the legacy systems or the System of Records, which was seen more as “keeping the lights on” mode and had to  do with stability, while Mode 2 referred to the System of Innovation or the System of Differentiation with the need to deal with speed, innovation, and agility.
While there are varied opinions around the very notion of Bi-modal IT, this term has been sold eloquently to C-Suite and for the last 3-4 years CIOs have been grappling with  “how to deal with 2 speed IT”; that is, how to transform while keeping the light on.
This talk essentially will provide the audience with the insight of “how to move to a single speed or Unimodal IT, where they can think of achieving IT agility not only in the system of engagement but also in the system of records. SRE or Site Reliability Engineer is the term coined and provided by Google in the late 2000s to run and manage their production workloads. While the SRE model does follow the principles of DevOps, especially for Continuous Monitoring and Service Management, it provides a much more prescriptive method of providing reliability, observability and stability through engineering and operations practices.

Impact of Containerization and Microservices on DevOps – by Capgemini 3:20 pm – 4:05 pm

40-45% of Enterprise Workloads is on the Cloud currently; this number is expected to reach 80% within the next three years. With more and more Enterprise Clients migrating their workloads on Cloud and Adopting Cloud Native Architecture, there is a profound need for Container-Based Pipelines. Microservices and Containers enable organizations to adopt a loosely coupled, flexible and nimble architecture where they can do multiple independent deployments in parallel without breaking things.

Containers, with its ephemeral property, also helps resolve the Configuration Drift aspect of Environments. Test Data Management for the CI/CD pipeline by Delphix – 1:40 pm – 2:25 pm

Enterprise datasets are sprawled across various types of data sources, ranging from legacy apps to packaged apps, web apps, and modern cloud-native apps. Data provisioning to dev and test environments generally relies on a serial IT ticketing system based on manual workflows, so copying and moving data is a time-consuming process, and will most likely be out of date by the time it is provisioned. Further slowing test data provisioning, datasets typically contain sensitive information and must first go through an anonymization process before being moved.

The delays in provisioning test data causes wait-states in the CICD pipeline, which means feedback is delayed for developers who are continually integrating code changes into the main branch. Dev teams are forced to move forward with new changes without information on the success or failure of previous changes. When test data is finally available, developers have to go back in time to remember what changed, opening up the potential for missed test cases and future rework from data-related defects, causing even more delays.
