It is not a secret that there is not enough representation of women in today’s technology industry. Despite the several STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) endorsement tracks that are made available to girls in the US and special programs to encourage women into engineering fields right from middle school, we still have to do more to break down the misperceptions of women working in technology and corporate sectors. We need to do a better job in promoting and motivating women by better articulating what it is really like for women working in the technology fields by demonstrating the positive aspects and benefits.

The role of women in IT

A woman brings a fresh perspective to the table, can withstand stress, and is better at balancing work and life. Women in executive positions have proved to be better leaders and strong mentors and they excel at nurturing competencies such as building relationships and developing others.

Why I support gender diversity

I completed both my bachelors and masters in a women’s university and was inspired by several woman throughout my life. I watched my mom very closely on how well she managed her profession of being a school principal and maintained her family. Besides believing in myself, I was fortunate to receive encouragement from my loved ones: from my family to pursue the required studies and from my husband to remain in the technology world.

My career development

I joined Capgemini in 2009 as a senior consultant and onboarded several local, national and major international customers and since, I have expanded the team and services to provide better service to our customers. Capgemini has always recognized my work and I was promoted in 2010. The management and the cross teams I interact with were very supportive and yet constantly offered challenging situations in front of me for me to react and grow.

Support gender diversity

Gender discrimination will go away when a healthy support network is provided by family members and life partners to an individual. We need to establish a firm trust between the employee and their manager and encourage female employees to step up and take up all responsibilities without any reservations.

Proud to be a mother and a working woman, Madhavi lives with her husband and two boys in Frisco, Texas. She enjoys spending time with her family, visiting new places and learning new cultures.
