That\u2019s according to the latest IMRG Capgemini Online Retail Index, which tracks online sales for 200 retailers. Whilst this is the highest growth has been to date in 2022, it is being compared against a result of -8.6% in June 2021, which builds a slightly less positive picture. Equally, though the Month-on-Month (MoM) growth increased by +1.5% against May, suggesting a slight levelling of sales, typical growth for this time of year is around 2\u20135% \u2013 putting this result at the low end of \u2018normal\u2019.<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UK online sales were down -2.3% Year-on-Year (YoY) in June<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This represents the highest result the Index has seen in 2022 \u2013 and a significant climb against the 3- (-7%), 6- (-16.8%) and 12-month (-18.8%) averages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Month-on-Month (MoM) the market reported +1.5% sales growth against May, but this fell short of the 2\u20135% that is typical for this time of year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average Basket Value (ABV) dropped slightly for the first time in five months, from \u00a3150 to \u00a3145, suggesting a degree of stabilisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere, after rising rapidly since January, the Average Basket Value (ABV) seems to have stabilised for the first time this year \u2013 dropping from last month\u2019s peak of \u00a3150 back to \u00a3145. This is still very high historically, suggesting that consumers continue to prioritise quality over quantity with their purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a category level, the trends seen throughout H1 continue to dominate, with all categories reporting negative growth aside from clothing. Looking at the Year-to-Date (YTD \u2013 measuring Jan-Jun 2022 YoY growth against Jan-Jun 2021) graph below, we can see the extent to which category growth has been negative in 2022. The total market is down -16.7% in H1, with categories such as gardening and homeware plummeting over -30%. Meanwhile, clothing continues to recover from the pandemic at +4% YTD and +11.3% YoY, perhaps buoyed by the uptick in in-person events and summer travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"469\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/gb-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/Category-performance-YTD.png?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-573012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/gb-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/Category-performance-YTD.png 1333w, https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/gb-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/Category-performance-YTD.png?resize=300,137 300w, https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/gb-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/Category-performance-YTD.png?resize=768,351 768w, https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/gb-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/07\/Category-performance-YTD.png?resize=1024,469 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Category performance YTD<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andy Mulcahy, Strategy and Insight Director, IMRG:&nbsp;<\/strong><em>\u201cIt speaks volumes that a decline of -2.3% feels quite good in the context of 2022. The cost-of-living crisis is having a profound impact on customer behaviour in ways that set it apart from the pandemic. For example, while the pandemic drove massive growth online, it didn\u2019t change things like average spend or conversion. If we compare a lockdown period (Q4 2020) with a non-lockdown period (Q4 2021), the differences in some metrics are negligible \u2013 the percentage of visitors who view a product page on retail sites fell -3.5%, while the percentage that add something to their basket and proceed to the checkout fell -4.5%. Comparing Q1 2021 with Q1 2022, as the cost-of-living increases started to bite, those falls are -12% and -22.7% respectively. In some respects, incredibly, it is having a bigger impact.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jeremy Wilson,&nbsp;Director of Commerce, Customer Transformation &amp; frog Tech at Capgemini:&nbsp;<\/strong><em>\u201cThough the headline numbers indicate some continued impact of COVID-19 \u2013 as the categories that did well during that time fall back and those that didn\u2019t pick up \u2013 a deeper dive into the wider trends does show that the cost-of-living crisis is having a very different effect on consumer behaviours. Boiled back, the pandemic mainly drove a channel switch \u2013 changing where budget was spent, but not necessarily how much and how often. The conversion drops and basket value increases we\u2019re seeing now appear to show that the cost-of-living crisis is having a far greater impact on consumers\u2019 spending caution and prioritisation of goods.
