Capgemini leads UK IT in environmental leadership, audit shows

Capgemini UK is the only UK company in the IT and consulting sector to currently hold EMAS certification. The company is part of the Capgemini Group, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services.

The award of renewed EMAS certification follows an independent audit of Capgemini’s UK facilities, its ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System  and of the data published in the company’s latest annual Environmental Statement. The audit was carried out by DNV Certification (UK-V0004), a company accredited by the UK Accreditation Service.

Highlights of Capgemini’s latest annual environmental performance compared with the base year of 2008 include:

• an increase in data centre efficiency of over 20 per cent, achieved three years ahead of plan
• a reduction in carbon emissions of 17.5 per cent, excluding data centres, putting the company on track to achieve its target (20 per cent reduction by end-2014) by end-2012, two years ahead of plan
• a 25 per cent reduction in office energy emissions
• a 34 per cent reduction in tonnage of waste generated
• a 61 per cent reduction in tonnage of waste sent to landfill.

I am therefore pleased to note that our strong progress towards meeting our ambitious environmental objectives has once again been verified by independent external audit.’

Other key achievements in the latest Capgemini Environmental Statement include the award-winning success of the company’s TravelWell scheme which aims to reduce travel-related emissions, the achievement of platinum status in Business in the Community’s Corporate Responsibility Index, and a listing for the third year running in the Sunday Times Best 60 Green Companies.
