NOTES TO EDITORS:

About the MPA
The Metropolitan Police Authority exists to make sure that London’s police are
accountable for the services they provide to people in the capital.
The Authority has 23 members who scrutinise and support the work of the MPS.
One of the MPA’s core responsibilities is to plan and manage the annual police
budget of over £2.7 billion. This financial management includes the signing of
significant contracts on behalf of the police service.
The Authority has achieved real benefits for the people of London. There are
now over 31,000 police officers, the largest number ever, and London was first
to introduce Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) – over 2,100 now provide
extra public reassurance and tackle anti-social behaviour that affects our communities.
About the Metropolitan Police Service
The Metropolitan Police Service has a worldwide reputation and has a unique place
in the history of policing. It is the largest of the police services operating
in the United Kingdom. Sir Robert Peel founded the Metropolitan Police Force
in 1829. The original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius
from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million.
Today, the Metropolitan Police Service employs 30,235 officers, 11,966 police
staff, 493 traffic wardens and 1392 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs),
and, since the realignment of police boundaries in April 2000, it covers an area
of 620 square miles and a population of 7.2million.
