Last Thursday 17 March at the Oracle Retail Week Awards 2011 the British retail industry witnessed an action replay of Co-op winning the coveted title sponsored by Capgemini for the fourth year running. Steve Sutton, UK CEO, Capgemini Infrastructure Services presented the award to Co-op as the clear winner for leading the way to ethical consumerism and responsible retailing stakes.

The Co-operative, with its landmark Ethical Operating Plan, beat Asda, B & Q, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco to win the “green” award by managing giant steps toward key environmental indicators such as energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission. Co-op was recognised for its dedication to issues like animal welfare to clean water in Africa, green energy for schools and inspiring the youth to address global poverty.
