Extreme sports enthusiast Nicky, from Battersea, plummeted 13,500ft in a tandem skydive on 19 June and raised over £2,600 for Alzheimer’s Research UK. She took the plunge while on holiday in Florida, as part of her employer’s year-long campaign to boost funds for the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

Nicky, 45, has worked for Capgemini Consulting in London for 12 years and was among the many staff who nominated Alzheimer’s Research UK as the company’s charity of the year. Since then, an ongoing series of fundraising activities has been set in motion, including quiz nights, cake stalls, marathons and more, with a pledge to raise £25,000 for research to improve detection of the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease.

Nicky talked about the skydive and her motivation for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK:
I love extreme sports so doing a skydive was the perfect challenge for me – what an incredible experience! It gave me the ideal opportunity to raise desperately needed money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a charity very close to my heart as my mum, Irene, has dementia.

“Mum is 75 and was diagnosed with dementia three years ago – a condition that’s developed as a result of her long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. My dad looks after her at home but it’s a big strain as she needs 24-hour attention. Despite all the love and care, dementia overwhelms everything and we’d dearly love to see better forms of diagnosis, new treatments and a cure.

“Given half the chance, I’d do the skydive all over again to raise even more money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I was extremely nervous when I went up in the plane, my mouth became dry and my heart was pounding. But once I jumped I couldn’t stop smiling. It’s great to know we’re all pulling together at Capgemini Consulting to raise money for pioneering dementia research.”

Miranda Mays, Corporate Fundraising Manager for Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:
This is a brilliant result and we can’t thank Nicky enough for taking on this daring adventure. We really appreciate her efforts to raise vital funds for dementia research and the ongoing support of everyone at Capgemini Consulting.

“All the money raised will go towards a specific research project being carried out by Prof Simon Lovestone, at King’s College London, to find a simple blood test to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Nicky’s contribution will make a significant difference to this vital research. Nicky’s contribution alone will pay for a further 130 hours of this vital research.

“There are 820,000 people across the UK living with dementia today, with numbers forecast to rise substantially in the next generation. Dementia can only be defeated through research but funding lags far behind other serious diseases. We rely entirely on our wonderful supporters like Nicky and her colleagues to fund our world-class research.”
