London – Capgemini UK plc, part of the Capgemini Group, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services, has today announced the launch of a new Degree Apprenticeship Programme. Building on the success of its Higher Apprentice Programme and its collaboration with Aston University, the company has committed to bring more young people in to work through apprenticeships and will recruit 65 students to join Capgemini on Aston’s Degree Apprenticeship Programme for the 2015-2016 academic year.
The Degree Apprenticeship Programme is a Tech Partnership led industry-wide initiative developed with the Government and has been designed to revolutionise the way young people develop high level skills through apprenticeships. From September, Degree Apprentices will spend the entirety of a four and a half-year course in client facing roles spread across Capgemini’s UK offices, developing core technical skills while working towards a full BSc (Hons) degree with Aston University. Students will be earning a salary without having to pay tuition fees.
The part-time degree in Digital Technology & Solutions, developed in conjunction with Aston University, is research-led with an emphasis on innovation, independence and problem solving. The course has been designed to develop the technical knowledge and skill set required for career in the technology sector, which contributes £91billion annually to the UK economy, according to recent research from the Tech Partnership.*
Students will complete the Degree Apprenticeship in the workplace as well as through a virtual learning environment, and will also visit the Aston University campus throughout the year. They will start off the programme with an innovative 11-week accelerated learning environment in Capgemini’s National Apprentice Training Centre.
Anouska Ramsay, Capgemini’s Director of Talent, said: “Our new Degree Apprenticeship Programme will enable young people to build the academic and practical skills needed for success in the tech sector and help create the talent needed to boost the digital economy. At Capgemini we have long been committed to nurturing young talent and are proud to be working at the forefront of this industry-wide initiative that will help the UK to compete on the global stage within the technology sector.”
Professor Ian Nabney, who has been developing the Degree Apprenticeships and partnerships on behalf of Aston University, said: “Aston University is committed to innovative employer-led learning. The aim of these new apprenticeships is to combine academic learning with real life practical skills to ensure that the UK has the talented and creative digital workforce that it needs in the future.”
Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “The apprentice agenda is not simply a numbers game, it is about quality as much as quantity. Degree apprenticeships bring together the very best of higher and vocational education, and allow apprentices to achieve a full bachelor’s or master’s degree, whilst training on the job. The initiative sees top employers such as Capgemini, universities, and professional bodies joining forces to develop the highly skilled workers our economy needs.”
