Our digital partnership with The Prince’s Trust supported over 250 young people gain digital and employability skills, build their confidence and enhance their network.

The cornerstone of this programme was the Prince’s Trust Get Started with Apps course, a one-week digital skills course where young people get a short but intense introduction to developing a mobile app picking up a number of technical and soft skills. They were then supported for six months to get back into education, employment or training.

One of our attendees in Telford, was Omar.  As part of the course, he met with several members of the Capgemini team.  He impressed our team and went on to be offered an internship in Telford within the finance team. Below is a short blog on his experiences.

Blog from Omar Sohail, Capgemini Intern:

I joined Capgemini in July on as a Finance Intern.

I met the Capgemini team earlier in the year when I attended a Get Started with Apps course with The Prince’s Trust.  On the course we looked at how apps affect our day to day life and how they can be used for good.  Working in teams we had to come up with an idea for an app and create one which would be helpful to people. Afterwards we created story boards to see what it would look like, then we designed, developed and coded a prototype. Once we had a final prototype we presented it to a panel of tech experts. I enjoyed this as it taught me how apps are created, and I learnt how to code.

Capgemini was the sponsor for the programme.  This gave me the chance to meet senior managers.  I decided to take the opportunity to ask about work experience.  We talked about two options, either 2 weeks work experience or an Internship. I applied for both and was given the internship position after an interview and assessment.   Initially this was a two -month role over summer, but fortunately it got extended to 3 months.

I have worked in Finance, Audit, Commercial Finance, Ecosystems, PMO and Test and Release. I help my team with their daily tasks such as bank reconciliations, looking at forecasts, seeing how a project is performing and identifying risks, I also attended meetings with them.  When, one of my colleagues was on annual leave I covered his work for him, this consisted of creating/editing project codes, sending out daily reports to accountants, uploading forecast recoveries, checking the day to day movements and uploading them if necessary from working day 5-8. I have learnt how to monitor a project, how to minimise risks, and all this will help me as I continue my studies in accounting.

I have also been volunteering with my team, we had to help a local Victorian History Museum prepare for summer trading by painting and cleaning its main features so that they were presented well and looked historic, this was fun as I got to meet new people and help the local community.

I have enjoyed my time at Capgemini, and would recommend Capgemini as an employer, it is a very nice place to work and all the people I have met have been supportive and fun and are dedicated to helping you learn.
