Sustainable Business Travel

As a people-centered business with a global client base, the international and national business travel we undertake accounts for more than half of our annual carbon emissions. Whilst recognizing that the mobility of our people is essential, we are committed to reducing our travel emissions without compromising on the value we gain from spending time face-to-face with our clients. We are committed to decoupling business travel and business growth.

Since 2015, we have taken a holistic approach to sustainable employee travel combining behavioral change campaigns, promoting lower carbon forms of transport, and deploying new technology to help our people make smart, safe and sustainable travel decisions.

Car sharing in India
In India, where we have partnered with sRide, a mobile app that promotes ridesharing across a number of our key office locations. sRide was introduced in March 2017 and over 25,300 employees have signed up to the program, making Capgemini India the largest user of the sRide app within the technology sector.

Encouraging public transport for commuting and business travel through discounts in the Netherlands
Every employee in the Netherlands has received an NS Business Card, an electronic payment card for all methods of public transport, including public bikes, taxis and some car parks. For those employees with a company car, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen card provides free travel on weekdays to discourage fuel consumption. Even employees without a company car get discounted travel using the card. The cards have proved popular, with an increase of 19% in distance covered using public transport to 5.2 million km in 2016.

Virtual collaboration technology in the UK
The UK team are changing the way people work to reduce travel time and carbon, as well as accelerating delivery through virtual collaboration, rolling out training for team members in using the virtual collaboration hubs and facilitating virtual sessions across seven surface hub sites. In the UK, investment in virtual collaboration technology has contributed to the reduction of business travel emissions by 8% since 2015, and increase in conference calls by 44% since 2016.
