Working with a social enterprise MyKindaFuture, DWP and Capgemini hosted and facilitated a “Best School Trip Event” attended by two Newcastle schools, Jarrow and Studio West. Taking place at the DWP Benton Park View Site on Wednesday, 8 February, it was a full day interactive event that gave 18 pupils and their teachers a chance to experience modern workplace, understand what it means to have a career in digital, as well learn about apprenticeships as an alternative to going to a university.

To help support pupils’ future career choices, the DWP and Capgemini volunteers got them involved in Agile Lego, web page development, scrums and sprints making “twirly bird” paper planes. Jarrow School’s Sue Green has already had two students ask if they can come to Capgemini for work experience, and Sam McLoughlin of Studio West School commented on the day: “Our students had a great insight into Capgemini and DWP, two employers they may have not previously considered. This was a real eye opener for the students learning about the vast opportunities they both hold and they had lots of fun along the way.”

Keith Dickson, Head of Universal Credit Live Service Digital Delivery at DWP, summarised the day: “It was a pleasure to join forces with Capgemini and showcase to the pupils what we do in DWP Digital. There was a great atmosphere on the day and I think we all took away some great learnings. Looking forward to the next one!”

Tom Lawson, Data & Analytics Lead, Capgemini DWP Account, commented: “At Capgemini, we’re passionate about helping those from diverse backgrounds unlock their potential. Having the opportunity to work jointly with MKF to make a difference in young people’s lives was a great opportunity for our colleagues to get involved and give something back to the local community.”

MyKindaFuture is a national social enterprise that helps employers reach the next generation of talent ranging from older school children 13-16 to school leavers and university graduates. Working in partnership, MyKindaFuture and Capgemini have been delivering STEM workshops across Capgemini offices over the last couple of years, supporting and inspiring young people to recognise and realise their strengths.
