My Career so far

I joined the Capgemini Graduate Scheme in February 2013 as a Project Analyst working within Capgemini’s Infrastructure Services.
It was only my second day when I found myself working on a client site for a high profile account. To say that my career so far has been a rollercoasterwould be an understatement.

Capgemini prides itself on young talent and it is a testament to the company’s faith in the quality of its graduates that they are prepared to throw them straight in at the deep end. The company knows that we are going to stumble along the way, but as long as we get up, learn from our mistakes and become better people, Capgemini is happy to let us do so.

IT Service Continuity? – You ask…

As a Capgemini IT Service Continuity (ITSC) Test Manager, it is my responsibility to ensure that all critical IT services are documented accurately in terms of availability and resilience.

Capgemini is a world leader in Technology and Infrastructure Services and manages a massive portfolio of client IT systems from infrastructure and applications to transformation and support. These services require high availability and multi tier resilience.

That’s where I come in.

If Capgemini are supporting an underpinning service with a system architecture that makes use multiple servers distributed across two Datacentres, it’s my job to find out how those servers communicate with one another, whether there any single points of failure (SPOFs) and what happens if a Datacentre is lost.

I will need to establish how the servers are configured, for instance, one Master and one Standby server – whereby the Standby server is always looking to see if the Master is still there. The resilience is created when the Standby establishes that it can no longer see the Master and takes action by assuming the responsibility of Master and taking control of service operation – we call this ‘Failover.’

Once all the relevant information had been captured, it is my responsibility to chair a Desktop Test for standard and non-standard scenarios that revolve around failure and recovery. This is a vital part of the process, so it is important to gather all the major players involved with a particular service to ensure accuracy and completeness of the recovery procedures. Key players can range from a selection of clients, 3rd party suppliers, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Major Incident Managers (MIM), onshore and offshore support teams.

Do I enjoy doing this for Capgemini?

Working in ITSC has given me a wide overview of Enterprise Level Technologies implemented on a large scale and how they interrelate to create a big-bang solution. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with a multi-disciplined network of support staff, which has helped me develop my understanding of Virtual Environments (VE), Virtual Machine Software (VMware) and Storage Area Networks (SAN).


I would recommend ITSC Management to anyone who is interested in the underlying technology behind the front-end user and desire a role that allows them to develop their technical and soft skills synchronously in a position that provides a clear line of responsibility.

As for Capgemini, I would recommend their Graduate Programme to anyone who wants to develop in a fast paced environment with a steep learning curve and demanding clients – it’s an opportunity of a lifetime, so enjoy the ride and see where it takes you!
