According to the latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index (eRSI) – see the full press release here, online retail sales exceeded expectations in December, with the Index recording an 18% year-on-year growth as a result of British shoppers spending £11 billion online – up from £9 billion spent in December 2012. The Index increased 16% over the last 12 months, far exceeding IMRG and Capgemini’s original forecast of 12%. It is now estimated that e-retail accounts for 21% of the total retail market.
The story was picked up in national media, including The Guardian which focused on how online sales had risen by 18% year on year in December. The Daily Telegraph’s retail correspondent, Graham Ruddick covered the news in two separate pieces online; one which appears online and in today’s print edition, focuses on IMRG and Capgemini’s forecast that online sales will break the £100bn barrier in 2014, whilst the other article discusses the performance of the UK’s retailers over the Christmas period.
The Times’ retail reporter, Alex Ralph wrote a small piece focusing on how the growth in sales was ahead of the IMRG Capgemini forecast of a 12% increase for 2013, with December sales rising to 18%. The story was also covered by City AM’s senior reporter, Kasmira Jefford. Her article led with ‘shoppers set to spend 17 per cent more in 2014’.
The story has been tweeted by journalists including Steve Hawkes, Deputy Political Editor at The Sun who wrote “Why is the high street struggling? £91 billion spent online in 2013 says IMRG Capgemini”. The story was also tweeted by Emma Simpson, the BBC Business Correspondent. She tweeted multiple times during the IMRG & Capgemini press briefing, writing: “IMRG: mobile was 27% of online sales, and a whopping 5.7% of all retail sales.
