Cloud Native Comes of Age

The shift to cloud native is under way, and businesses who fail to embrace this change risk falling dangerously behind. Meanwhile, leading cloud-native organizations say it is making them more agile, innovative, and profitable than their competitors.

We spoke to 900 executives to see how a cloud-native approach was driving change at their organizations. We discovered a world of what we call cloud-native leaders, and cloud-native laggards—with leaders building more than 20% of their applications in the cloud, to excel within it. This means they’re better able to respond to changing market demands and grasp opportunities than their laggard counterparts.

Our findings have uncovered that cloud-native apps enable IT to better contribute to business agility and innovation. Adoption of cloud-native apps is set to jump from 15% today to 32% by 2020.

We uncovered that the shift to a cloud native way of working was attributable to a desire to improve velocity (74%), collaboration (70%), and improved customer experience (67%).

Cloud-native leaders are also more likely to describe their approach to software development as agile (69% to 37%), their deployment as automated (78% to 46%), and their DevOps teams as integrated (69% to 38%).

Furthermore, they’re more likely to have a growth-focused attitude towards IT functions, with improving customer experience (90%), business agility (87%) and scalability (85%) viewed as higher priorities than reducing costs (79%).

However, adopting this approach comes with its own set of challenges. CIOs and business leaders often aren’t on the same page regarding priorities when it comes to IT. Other challenges include skills shortages (70%) and battling ingrained cultures that are opposed to a cloud-native approach (65%). On the technical side of things, there are difficulties integrating with legacy infrastructure (62%) and being locked in to vendor contracts (58%).
