And now, thanks to a breakthrough project supported by Capgemini\u2019s Tech4Positive Futures challenge, conservationists can use that science to detect the presence of species \u2013 in minutes rather than weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"387\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/ca-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/03\/Ian.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-689632\" style=\"width:260px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/ca-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/03\/Ian.jpg 387w, https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/ca-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/03\/Ian.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/ca-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/03\/Ian.jpg?resize=300,300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ian Hardy, New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineering Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synapse.com\/\">Synapse<\/a>, part of Capgemini, it\u2019s a project that resonates deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA project is always more meaningful when it aligns with your own personal convictions,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s real added value when you work on sustainability-focused projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian is part of Gene Genius, one of the winning teams in the latest edition of the Tech4Positive Futures challenge \u2013 Capgemini\u2019s flagship program that brings together colleagues to tackle major societal and environmental challenges through tech innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gene-genius\"><strong>Gene Genius<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the project, the Gene Genius team, based in Seattle, USA, has partnered with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservationxlabs.com\/\"> Conservation X Labs<\/a>, an organization that uses DNA analysis to identify the presence of animal or plant species anywhere in the world. To do this, they developed a handheld device called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservationxlabs.com\/nabit\">NABIT<\/a> (Nucleic Acid Barcode Identification Tool). Now, conservationists can check if salmon have returned to a river after a dam removal, or detect invasive species like the European green crab, almost instantly. But there was a challenge: until now, the cartridges couldn\u2019t be produced at the scale needed to make a real impact. The team wanted to change that, working toward a 20-fold scaling up of cartridge production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where mechanical engineer Carly Silvernale came in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur role was to translate a very delicate and time-consuming manual assembly into a fully automated process. The cartridges include fragile, freeze-dried beads that react with DNA and crumble with any force, mishandling, or misalignment. Additionally, operators have to work through thick PPE gloves, making this delicate process even more challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carly\u2019s team mapped out the full assembly workflow, designed hardware to fixture the parts, and programmed a custom pick-and-place robot to assemble the cartridges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team also advised on lowering parts costs by sourcing vendors and exploring different manufacturing options \u2013 making the solution scalable and cost-effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-designing-for-sustainability\"><strong>Designing for sustainability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Automation wasn\u2019t the only challenge. A life-cycle assessment revealed that shipping cartridges globally would create a significant carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019re built in Seattle and shipped worldwide, the carbon footprint is huge,\u201d Ian says. \u201cSo, we designed a modular, inexpensive manufacturing solution that can be replicated at Conservation X Labs sites globally. Decentralized manufacturing lowers emissions and makes the solution more sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tech-to-make-it-real\"><strong>Tech to make it real<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For Carly, this project means more than just a technical challenge. \u201cI love working on engineering problems that are fundamentally challenging and require iteration,&#8221; she says. &#8220;In this case, it was especially motivating to know that the output of our work supports conservation and biodiversity.
