Industrial companies are ready to embrace 5G

5G will resolve the connectivity problems that plague many industry verticals, including manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and energy and utilities. In fact, 75% of industrial organizations believe that, within the next five years, 5G will be a catalyst for their digital transformation – and they are willing to invest heavily to get it.

5G has sparked tremendous interest amongst these organizations, with 65% eager to implement the technology within two years of availability. However, are telecom operators capable of meeting their requirements and timeline?

5G in industrial companies

In the report 5G in industrial operations: How telcos and industrial companies stand to benefit from the Capgemini Research Institute, around 800 manufacturing and industrial companies around the world were surveyed to find out how willing they are to implement 5G and where they feel it can deliver the largest impact. In addition, over 170 industry and telecom executives were surveyed to determine the 5G expectations of industrial companies and help them understand how to meet those demands.

To achieve these goals, our report looks at four areas:

  • The appetite for rapid 5G adoption and the factors fueling this interest
  • Why possible delays in 5G deployment are leading these organizations to consider applying for their own 5G licenses and the impact on telecom companies
  • Manufacturing use cases for 5G
  • Recommendations for industrial and telecom companies.

Collaborating is the key to successful 5G adoption

Industrial companies are highly anticipating the implementation of 5G but the features will take time to emerge. The waiting time has caused some to consider applying for their own private licenses to ensure greater independence and security. However, to fully benefit from the vast disruptive opportunities 5G offers, these companies should work closely with telecom operators, pinpoint areas where 5G can add the most value, and design the right implementation roadmap.
