Seizing Opportunities

As a new campus hire, starting a career can seem daunting. You don’t know exactly what you were hired to do and where that will take you. You join your first project and try to do your best and do what you are told without overstepping boundaries. Those are the right things to do when you first join but my biggest piece of advice when you first join Capgemini is to listen and not be afraid to speak up.

When I joined my project, we were in the middle of gathering requirements for our first release. I was brought on to help with project management so I quickly learned about our staffing plan for the rest of the project to help budget expenses. While looking at the plan, my manager briefly mentioned that someone on our team needed to learn iRise (a simulation tool to help design websites) so when we rolled off our resources that knew how to use iRise, someone could make small edits if needed.

I had seen iRise a few times in the previous weeks and thought it looked interesting so I went to our awesome training website to see if there were any tutorials on iRise. I found a few tutorials with a free 30-day trial and started learning a little bit.

A week later my manager again mentioned that someone needed to learn iRise. I quietly said that I had downloaded it and starting taking tutorials. Next thing I knew I was learning advanced iRise features from our current iRise resource and was going to take over all of the iRise work a month later. That was 6 months ago and I am still the sole iRise resource on my project. We have had to create many more screens and I have had to do a lot of complicated tasks and I love every minute of it.

I never thought I would be helping with website design or learning a new simulation tool in my first 3 weeks at Capgemini but I am so happy I did. I am one of the only people in my business unit that knows this skill and have made myself valuable on my project. I am planning to continue to help with iRise in our next release for this client and hopefully in all my projects after. If I hadn’t been listening and hadn’t been curious enough to see what iRise was about, then I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing now.

If you hear someone mention a job, task, program, etc. that seems above your skill level, still go and learn more about it. Try it out and talk to your manager if you think it’s something that you could do or help with. If it doesn’t work then at least you tried but if it does, you can seize an opportunity to try a new experience that could change your career path with Capgemini.
