Quantifying the business benefits of Information Governance

How big are the business benefits of an Information Governance (IG) program? It is difficult, even impossible to measure this exactly. But expect some Directors to ask for it. Many executives ‘get’ the value of IG right away and also immediately understand how difficult it would be to quantify the commercial value. But there are always a few doubters and they will want to see some kind of business benefits model. Either way, they’ll want to see first ROI results after just a few months of the program.
We should differentiate between direct and indirect business benefits. There are 9 types of direct business benefits that can be immediately attributed to an IG program. They range from savings in fixing data quality issues, improved reporting credibility and reduced regulatory risk. On the other hand there are another 6 types of indirect benefits where the link to the IG activities is more tenuous (see diagram “Business Benefits of an IG Framework”).

Of course, the actual number and relevance of unique business benefits depends to some degree on the nature of the organization. The direct benefits can be more easily attributed and are therefore more immediately credible; the indirect benefits are wider, but closer to the language of the Board. You may need to write up both sets of benefits, e.g. by using Capgemini’s IG Business Benefits Model.
One large UK retailer chose to develop a detailed Business Benefits Model with ROI metrics, while the Directors at another large UK retailer believed it would take the IG program team too long to produce credible ROI metrics and instead wanted the team to get on with producing deliverables, relying on their instincts that this would eventually deliver significant business benefits.
