Transformation is not a new thing. From ice harvesting to refrigerators, for centuries, multiple transformations have changed the way that we do business and live lives. What makes this age that we live in unique is that there are multiple tectonic plates that are shifting at the same time. That is, multiple disruptions that are occurring in parallel in the name of digital transformation. Social, Mobility, Analytics, Cloud, Internet of Things, Cognitive, Robotics, Machine Learning. While, this may seem like just impacting how we do business, quite equally the impact on our personal lives is phenomenal as well.
Is gadget addiction real? Well addiction, sure is, real. However, the problem is not necessarily the gadgets. There are times people were addicted to watching television or speaking to someone on phone for hours or well, simply hanging out with friends in a porch or bar... killing time. Moderation is the key. While it is true that gadgets are more attractive, more distracting, the root cause of this problem is not the gadgets, but the human mind. For millennials, “focus” amidst increased distraction from omni channel, is enabling them to acquire new skills to master senses.
“Self Ubers” are disrupting Uber models Among many jobs, one that is yet to be branded is the “aggregators”, who simply crash the middle layer by connecting directly to consumers by leveraging the convergence space connecting “ideas to assets to resources”. Self Uber kind of platforms are bringing in new transformations that enable individual entrepreneurs like cab drivers, bakers etc. to directly serve their clientele with no aggregation platforms. And there are smart technologies like forks that tell you when you’re eating too fast and electronic toothbrushes that promote dental hygiene – rapidly becoming part of our daily lives.
Large enterprises disintegrate, wealth is spread… Is all this transformation making our businesses richer? Well, depends. Some of the very large enterprises that are serving consumers are challenged by emerging digital start-ups that are created with rich and broad features and are adapting to consumer needs rapidly. These lean companieshave high speed to market that distinguish them significantly. The most interesting part is that some of these companies are not greedy for tall margins, therefore are able to provide high quality in great speed at very low costs. And, ofcourse most of them are not subject to challenges and expectations from stock market
Serendipity does not happen in digital You write an email to five recipients. Guess how many people receive the email directly? Well, that’s the point. While it is no doubt that we live in a global village, happy accidents of meeting people with fresh ideas or rare skills does not happen that much in digital ways. Hence going out and meeting people is critical. When people with great ideas meet those with skills and resources, this is when magic happens. Magic meaning new transformations.
Social Digital requires businesses to be more responsible It is no surprise that individuals in social networks are becoming more & more alert in providing false information about their location, their busy schedules, who they are with etc. Simply, it is quite a challenge to manage a lie nowadays. Similarly, the social media and its effects demand companies like Airb&b more responsible. Corporations like United Airlines cannot get away with poor practices that dissatisfy customers any more, since the consequences are immediate & large.
Agile, DevOps – same bottle different wine Have a quick chat with those that have been in information technology for well over 20 years. They would tell you that the architects, designers, developers, testers etc in those times worked closely with users to develop software in fast iterations. But the results were with too many defects. Therefore, governance was created with specialized teams including independent verification & validation regimes that increased quality but reduced speed. Fast forward to current day, the processes, technologies and tools have become sophisticated. Much of software development is automated or in the process of getting automated leading to cognitive methods with minimal defects. Now the need of the digital age is speed and agile & devops is enabling organizations to deliver what their customers want in rapid speed and superior quality.
