Crowd Testing projects need someone like Zubin Mehta!

Category : Testing
If you don’t know who Zubin Mehta is, he’s a world famous renowned symphony conductor.

What’s conducting?

Here is what Wikipedia says

Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as a concert, by way of visible gestures with the hands, arms, face and head. The primary duties of the conductor are to unify performers, set the tempo, execute clear preparations and beats (meter), and to listen critically and shape the sound of the ensemble.

Why Crowd testing projects require Zubin Mehta?

Let’s look at some of the key challenges faced with crowd testing

·         Ensuring test coverage, most of the time focus could be with areas where it’s easy to find defect
·         Quality of test
·         Too many duplicate defects and less impactful defects
·         No consistency in defect reporting
·         Immediate and prompt communication with the group of crowd sourced testers
·         No detailed planning or tracking

What a conductor in crowd testing can do to address this challenges?

•       Assembles the Crowd
•       Understands the crowd, knows who can perform what and at what level,  maintains and manages groups of  players
•       Coordinate and understand project test scope and plan the testing,  knows what exactly needs to be performed, when and  what speed
•       Identify roles required and right resources to perform and  do work allocation
•       Identify and track work deliverable from Crowd Source Pool
•       Set process to avoid duplicate efforts and bring consistency

Though, this role may sound similar to regular test management role, the challenge is to bring a diversified, geographically distributed and unknown resources together to perform the piece right. Unless it’s conducted properly, crowd testing would end up being dissonant set of noise.
