What boxes should you tick for a successful transformation?

Transforming your business to compete in the digital and mobile era is not as simple as ticking a few boxes—but it can help to put you on the right path.
Telcos in many European markets face fierce competition for fixed and mobile broadband customers: New service providers are launching competitively priced or free services that are eating into core revenue streams. To hit back, many operators are aiming to improve the customer experience by introducing new offers such as carefully tailored bundles and flat-rate pricing models, but that is putting a strain on networks and billing systems that have long been in place.
Regulation and network access obligations—for new fiber and LTE, as well as older copper networks—also threaten to impact operators, and there is a growing imperative to ensure that customers receive advertised bandwidth and services. In Sweden, for example, the government has set a target that 40% of all households and businesses should have access to broadband at a minimum speed of 100 Megabits per second by 2015, rising to 90% of households and businesses by 2020
Telcos know they need to transform their legacy systems and processes to become more agile and offer flexible services in an increasingly digital and mobile world. Yet they also want to do so while focusing on their business needs, without huge expense and guaranteeing return on investment.
What’s more, not all telcos are at the same stage of their transformation journey. Some will require an end-to-end overhaul of their infrastructure, while others need a more evolutionary approach or simply a modular transformation focusing on an individual element.
With all this in mind it’s not easy to choose your transformation partners, but to minimize risk and maximize opportunities, consider the following:
- Use standardized software and business processes that are driven by your business needs.
- Look for accelerated programs that can help to get services to market faster and reduce costs.
- Collaborate with partners who can show strength in outsourcing and a track record of working with different communications service providers.
- Demand a proven architecture where all functional applications work together in a cohesive fashion.
- Ask for best-in-class and, wherever possible, off-the-shelf applications.
- Choose a partner that can demonstrate that business processes, packaged systems, methodology and tools are built with agility and robustness in mind.
 - Work with partners that can demonstrate real, working solutions before you commit fully to transformation.
Tick these boxes and you can be confident that you are getting a flexible, tailored platform for that essential communications transformation, ensuring that you stay ahead of your competitors.
