As a prominent figure inside the "Capgemini Twitter Gang", Rick Mans lives and breathes social media. Heck, I even introduce him to other people as Rick "social" Mans. There are few people at Capgemini that understand what social media like Twitter, wiki, marketing-as-a-conversation, blogs, social networks etc. can do for Capgemini and for its clients and he's one of them. - What does an information architect and social media evangelist do?: As a social media evangelist I talk with people about what social media can do for them. Not to convince them (they should convince themselves) but to inform them about opportunities and things they miss by not using social media in their daily life and business. It is really a great role since I meet a lot of different people and due to the fact I meet so many different people I can help these people to connect to others in my network so they can help each other. As an information architect I am mostly involved with alignment, integration and interoperability. Technology is an enabler and what is under the hood of technology is not important. My focus is often on information, activities and people based on the business strategy of the organization that is often the input for my work.
- What an average day looks like: I tend to avoid average days, and average days seems to avoid me too. When working in architecture assignment I often use a standard approach since I like some structure while working. However the big variety of customers and challenges makes it never an average day. In most architecture assignments you have deliverables that are alike, however the way to come to this deliverable is not always the same. Every week I try to visit our office once or twice to have some conversations with colleagues about social media or to work on a service offering related to social media.
- Favorite project/assignment: My last project (which ended last Friday) was terrific. I got the opportunity to help a department with product development for their Internet site. It was great since one of my deliverables was knowledge transfer about social media and Web2.0 concepts. At the end of my twelve week assignment all members of the department had really absorbed all knowledge available and were still hungry for more knowledge. It is really great to see that transferring knowledge on a subject I am passionate about could have such a momentum. A nice side effect was that everyone started to use Twitter, which made conversations go on even beyond office hours. I really loved the commitment of these people on these subjects.
- What will be hot in 2009: Doing things that you are passionate about. People with passion about a certain subject have become more important than ever. Besides that social media will continue to grow in 2009, it is the best marketing and PR instrument that there is for companies and individuals. And last but not least: sharing and connecting with one other, it will improve you not only as a person, but will also improve organizations and their products.
