My favorite quote I ever heard at Capgemini is “this company needs more Lee’s”. Tadaaaam, and here I present you another one :-). I met Lee some time ago through Tim Kelly (Capgemini’s virtual worlds guru) and we started to talk on Twitter and Chatterous about.. hmm mostly not really IT related things I think, but last year I invited Lee for an innovation workshop with IBM in their Java development labs in Hursley UK and got to know his other (dark?) side: enterprise architecture. I think that one of the vaguest roles in the IT industry must be architect. You have software architects, systems architects, solutions architects, enterprise architects and other xxx architects and what exactly is the difference? In last week’s excellent post by Wiebe Wiersema and Anton van Weel you can read about the role of a solutions architect, in this week’s Featured job role, we’ll have a peek at what this enterprise architect thingy is all about. - What does an Enterprise Architect / Strategist do? Works to integrate business and technology for clients to deliver sustainable new value. A good Enterprise Architect needs a strong understanding of technology (in its full breadth), planning, financials and program management. It is these skills together that allow the development of enterprise models that, over time, enable businesses to leverage technology to transform themselves. Sometimes it is more simply about bringing their technology in line with the operating models they execute. A good Strategist needs to understand how technology can add value to a client situation and has to be able to communicate complex concepts to a range of stakeholders – from board level executives through to IT professional.
- What an average day looks like: email triage, social networking, meetings - both client and internal, contributing to thought leadership whitepapers, writing business cases and developing propositions for Capgemini go to market approaches (and that was just today!!)
- Favorite project: They were all good in their own way - even the tough ones. They all offered unique learning experiences but the most memorable were the first few projects where I was engaged as the lead architect. Being ultimately accountable for the integrity of the solutions we’re developing can be quite exhilarating. My favorite project though was when I delivered a strategy for improving intelligence analysis for UK policing. I worked with some fascinating characters and bought technology innovation into a domain that is essential to public security. Making a material difference in this space is tremendously fulfilling.
- What will be hot in 2009?: enterprise mashups as organizations start to understand that they are about delivering just in time applications that meet specific situational needs. This is about real Business Technology that can be delivered simply and effectively but often with compelling results.
