Oracle and Docker

Category : Technical

More and more companies start to adopt Docker into their IT landscape. Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software containers and is commonly seen as the next step in cloud platforms for many companies and is seen as a solution for many problems currently faced by companies who do have an average until large size IT footprint.

Oracle has been a promoter of Docker and is currently incorporating it in their Openstack implementations and it forms the basis of the Oracle Public Application Container Cloud Service. The below image outlines the Oracle vision on how Docker can be used for simplified deployment and upgrades in combination with Oracle Openstack and Oracle Linux.

Docker itself outlines their product in the following terms: "Docker containers wrap up a piece of software in a complete filesystem that contains everything it needs to run: code, runtime, system tools, system libraries – anything you can install on a server. This guarantees that it will always run the same, regardless of the environment it is running in." By doing so, Docker will provide you with an open, lightweight and secure solution for containerized deployments while at the same time accelerate developer onboarding, empower developer creativity and  eliminate environment inconsistencies.

During the OpenStack Australia Day 2016 Avi Miller from Oracle gave a talk on deploying and upgrading openStack using docker. This is an interesting talk to watch in case you are working with, or investigating the use of those solutions.

Both Oracle and Capgemini are currently deploying docker solutions in the market at customers and enabling customers to make use of the benefits or Docker. For more information about this topic, feel free to contact Johan Louwers directly via johan.louwers@capgemini.com
