While&nbsp;it may be&nbsp;fairly simple&nbsp;to&nbsp;overcome&nbsp;portal pain points in an office, that friction can have disastrous outcomes for deskless and frontline workers who perform their jobs<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>in time\u2011&nbsp;and safety-critical environments. The problem is that people-experience strategies often start at HQ on the desktop, not in the field or on the factory floor.&nbsp;If an experience strategy&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;survive the frontline&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;where there&nbsp;is&nbsp;no spare time and no margin for error&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;it&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;an experience strategy at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deskless and frontline experiences&nbsp;need to be put first&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;because these roles expose what works and what breaks in employee experience design. The toughest challenges&nbsp;can be managed&nbsp;by digital agents&nbsp;that&nbsp;do the orchestration work that frontline teams&nbsp;shouldn\u2019t&nbsp;have to&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;ensuring&nbsp;safety, compliance, and trust at scale.&nbsp;In essence, the&nbsp;experience design&nbsp;must&nbsp;reflect the requirements&nbsp;and workflows&nbsp;of a high-performance team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-agents-ensure-safety-compliance-nbsp-and-trust-at-scale-nbsp\"><strong>AI agents ensure safety, compliance,&nbsp;and trust at scale<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most AI agents get stuck in the pilot phase, leaving a gap between execution and insights. But as technology evolves and matures,&nbsp;agentic AI&nbsp;can&nbsp;eliminate&nbsp;onerous&nbsp;manual&nbsp;tasks like&nbsp;maintaining&nbsp;continuous audit trails,&nbsp;while&nbsp;improving&nbsp;outcomes&nbsp;such as&nbsp;safety and productivity.&nbsp;But none of these gains materialize unless the experience itself is redesigned first. Agentic AI amplifies the intent of a workflow&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;good or bad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, Vision AI, a type of vision language model (VLM), can analyze data like videos and photos to capture compliance evidence automatically.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;these technologies only improve experience when they remove steps rather than create new ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the field, mobile-native assistants can streamline everyday interactions like leave requests, incident reporting, and shift scheduling through natural language. And generative AI continues to advance its capabilities in translating policies into plain contextual guidance&nbsp;when needed. AI agents&nbsp;are&nbsp;transforming industries&nbsp;by&nbsp;redefining how work is done&nbsp;by&nbsp;anticipating&nbsp;and performing multi-step tasks to support workers.&nbsp;In frontline environments, value is measured not by intelligence added but by work removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-trusted-tech-teammate-nbsp\"><strong>A trusted tech teammate<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-a-trusted-tech-teammate\">Agentic artificial intelligence has&nbsp;emerged&nbsp;quickly, and enterprises have found value in improving workflows and even overhauling operational processes. But&nbsp;moving&nbsp;from assistive AI to autonomous, governable AI agents&nbsp;operating&nbsp;inside&nbsp;enterprise workflows often raises&nbsp;concerns&nbsp;about&nbsp;lowering the guardrails&nbsp;while managing complex governance requirements. This can only be&nbsp;mitigated by designing transparency and trust into the user experience from the outset, something Capgemini calls Trust-by-UI, a non-negotiable design principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, today\u2019s copilots and bots have become trusted teammates that orchestrate complex tasks with bounded autonomy. That means they&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have complete&nbsp;freedom yet&nbsp;operate&nbsp;independently within human-defined constraints to deliver value while minimizing risk and ensuring security. Digital agents proactively complete tasks, resolve tickets, update schedules, and flag risks within set&nbsp;policies, and&nbsp;can escalate tasks&nbsp;as&nbsp;required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ServiceNow has products with responsible and explainable AI baked in,&nbsp;eliminating&nbsp;the black boxes characteristic of the technology\u2019s deep learning neural networks. Instead of just delivering outcomes, the AI enforces governance best practices, making sure every action shows what happened, why it happened, and who owns the outcome. It also automatically logs explainability data, preserves human accountability, and&nbsp;maintains&nbsp;auditable transparency, crucial for compliance across various sectors. This helps supervisors justify outcomes, while workers trust AI decisions.<strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steps-to-orchestrate-an-invisible-desktop-nbsp\"><strong>Steps to orchestrate an invisible desktop<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0invisible\u00a0desktop is not a rollout plan.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a design pattern that survives environments with pressure, risk, and constant motion.\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/be-en\/insights\/expert-perspectives\/the-invisible-desktop-why-deskless-and-frontline-experience-is-the-stress-test-for-employee-experience-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concept of the invisible desktop<\/a>\u00a0can be applied across industries from life sciences and supply-chain management to defense and agriculture.\u00a0In this model, employees are rarely if ever\u00a0seated at a physical desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine an anomaly happens during production, where a machine behaves unexpectedly but&nbsp;hasn\u2019t&nbsp;failed outright. In secure environments, doing nothing can be as dangerous as doing the wrong thing. An agent with bounded autonomy will correlate historical incidents and known resolutions, check whether intervention is allowed under current safety rules, then propose the best allowed action or escalate automatically if thresholds are exceeded. The worker then sees three things: what they can do, what they cannot do, and who is already engaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start building this delegated execution experience, enterprises should choose one frontline journey they wish to improve, such as&nbsp;a safety incident, shift readiness, access to credentials, or the equipment issue described above. AI agents&nbsp;should only be introduced&nbsp;where they remove time, risk, or uncertainty. If quantitative or qualitative improvements in one of these three areas&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;be achieved,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;not a fit for agentic AI. The&nbsp;next&nbsp;step is&nbsp;the actual&nbsp;design&nbsp;of&nbsp;the invisible desktop, with&nbsp;one entry point, clear ownership, and orchestration behind the scenes.&nbsp;Finally,&nbsp;AI agents&nbsp;are introduced, but&nbsp;only where they&nbsp;delete&nbsp;work and increase certainty.&nbsp;If it&nbsp;doesn\u2019t, it&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;experience&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;admin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;invisible&nbsp;desktop&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;about better portals, smarter chatbots, or more intelligence layered onto existing processes.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;about designing employee experience for environments with no spare time and no tolerance for failure. When experience is treated as delegated execution&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;and AI is introduced only where it&nbsp;deletes&nbsp;work&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;deskless and frontline teams get systems that support how work&nbsp;actually happens.
