Here, she explains how a sporting mindset has benefited her professional career<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<p>When it comes to colleagues at work having hidden talents, Rachel Yang literally sets the bar high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/original-198C2399-BE2D-499E-AB13-168319B1746C.jpeg?w=225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-967360\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In her professional life at Capgemini, she is a Salesforce consultant, but outside of the office she competes as a pole vaulter \u2013 one who has smashed records, broken boundaries, and won medals at major sporting championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel is currently on assignment for Capgemini in Montreal, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is my first overseas posting and I love it. It\u2019s a very diverse and artistic city, and I\u2019ve already met people from many different cultures here,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting work in a new country can be a daunting prospect, but Rachel\u2019s sporting life has undoubtedly helped prepare her to face new \u2013 and perhaps scary \u2013 challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be lying if I said pole vaulting isn\u2019t scary,\u201d she laughs. \u201cThe pole could snap. You could fall out of the net. The only thing to do is focus on your technique. Focus on the process and not the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-breaking-boundaries\"><strong>Breaking boundaries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/processed-6E779849-CC3B-4454-B729-DAAAD307A2DF-0E48C287-8462-4B7A-BBBD-2456520953D9-edited.jpeg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-967370\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel\u2019s sporting achievements are considerable. Women have only been able to compete in the pole vault event at the Olympic Games since Sydney 2000. Rachel\u2019s career in the sport started six years later, when she was 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even then, people were throwing obstacles in her path. \u201cI was told that I was too old to compete seriously because most athletes have taken up the sport by the time they are 17,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her initial attempts were hardly encouraging. \u201cDuring my very first training session, I tore the anterior cruciate ligament in my knee. The doctor told me I needed surgery and that I wouldn\u2019t compete again, but six months later I was back in training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2006, Rachel was the only competitive female pole vaulter in Singapore. She then won a silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championship in Jordan in 2007, and a bronze at the Asian Indoor Games in the same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, Rachel suffered a spinal injury that threatened to cut short her career. But with the support of her family and team, she came back again to break her own previous national record and became the first Singaporean to qualify for the pole vault at the Asian Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mentality of motivation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Overcoming challenges and setbacks are qualities Rachel brings to her work as a Salesforce consultant with Capgemini. \u201cUltimately, I approach every roadblock with the assumption that there is a solution; we just haven\u2019t found it yet. In that sense, the worlds of sport and Capgemini are connected,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Capgemini, if I\u2019m dealing with difficult situations, I don\u2019t give up. I keep searching for a solution.&nbsp;Sport has shown me how that\u2019s possible. It\u2019s a mindset I bring to everything at work \u2013 from my email responses to my approach to meetings. I think it\u2019s true that when you demonstrate your mindset in all these small ways, they can add up to something much larger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/original-68FEDE6A-AF88-44AF-B777-7BFC106BF1CA.jpeg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-967400\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only approach she\u2019s learned from sport. \u201cWe\u2019re taught to visualize the whole process,\u201d she explains. \u201cThat\u2019s how I was able to come back from injury. That\u2019s how I\u2019m able to do the jumps: I imagine each stage clearly then execute it as well as possible. It\u2019s an approach that really helps when working on projects with Capgemini.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy colleagues sometimes comment that my fighting spirit \u2013 my resilience and determination \u2013 is a real asset to the team. With all the training and pressure I\u2019ve been through in my life as an athlete, I think it gives me an edge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reaching new heights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/original-7668DB3E-A0CC-4A8E-B294-8F483B4F913A-edited.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-967392\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel retired from competition in 2012, married her coach, and celebrated the birth of their first child a year later. For many female athletes, this might have represented the conclusion of an already successful career \u2013 but Rachel is not most people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She emerged from retirement in 2015 to win a silver medal (Singapore\u2019s first) at the 28<sup>th<\/sup> Southeast Asian Games with a new national record of 3.90m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the time, I was studying for an MBA, working full-time, and looking after a two-year-old child,\u201d she says. \u201cI really relied on the support of my family and colleagues to get through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People at Capgemini have really supported my sporting endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the age of 41, Rachel has no plans to stop jumping, training for the 2023 Asian Games and proud to be the oldest athlete in the Singapore national team. \u201cWhen I won a medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 2015, I brought my son onto the podium next to me for the photograph,\u201d she says. \u201cThis sums up my approach to life. It\u2019s what breaking barriers is all about: overcoming other people\u2019s perceptions of what you can achieve \u2013 whether that\u2019s in sport or in your professional
