What was it that drew you to a career at Capgemini originally?

I was drawn to Capgemini by the possibility of solving interesting problems using cool, innovative technologies, in order to contribute something positive to others.

What’s your current role at Capgemini?

I’m currently a Consultant in the Insights & Data service line (specifically in the Artificial Intelligence Engineering capability).

How have your studies helped you in your current role at Capgemini?

I have a Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics) and a PhD in Cosmology & Astrophysics from the University of Sydney. I studied to become a research scientist, which perhaps unsurprisingly, requires skills that are great to have in consulting. My science degrees helped me develop critical thinking and analytical skills, which are needed to deconstruct and reframe problems in consulting, as well as creative thinking skills, which are needed to produce innovative solutions to hard problems. I also learned how to code during my studies, which has opened the door to the AI space for me.

What are you passionate about in your role?

There are a few things I’m passionate about! I love the process of solving problems. There is a nice feeling of satisfaction that comes with finishing a project or challenging task! I also love helping people in some way, and if what I did has made things easier or in other ways benefited them, then it makes me really happy. I also love exploring the possibilities for how technology will evolve and imagining what the future could be like, and in my role I get to be in the thick of cutting-edge technology.

What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

There isn’t really a typical day for me, which is typical for consulting! I partake in a variety of different activities, both for clients and for Capgemini. I am currently analysing business data to help remediate a data security issue at a client, and automating a number of business processes that would be extremely tedious to do manually. Beyond that, I’m also working with the Social Innovators group to help Capgemini make a positive impact, and helping out with initiatives like Women at Capgemini.

Tell us about your work life harmony at Capgemini?

I think Capgemini has got the balance between work and play absolutely right! There is certainly an expectation that we put in our best effort at work, but everyone is really understanding if we can’t be at work or if we have to leave early. I’m really grateful for the effort we put in to ensure that everyone has fun! All the grads and grad alumni get together regularly for trivia nights, putt putt, hot pot dinners and more. It’s a great way to catch up with everyone we don’t see very often, in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

How would you describe the culture at Capgemini?

What has been the most empowering moment in your Capgemini career journey?

I think the most empowering moment so far for me is when I figured out how to automate a process that would save a lot of manual work. I started out without the necessary expertise or experience for what I was doing, and initially had very little faith that I could do it. I spent weeks on a learning curve, while I tried to solve the multitude of problems that just kept popping up. I was so happy when I finally got a working solution! It was quite empowering for me because it made me realise that we can solve so many problems if we just keep at it and don’t let our doubts get in the way.

How does Capgemini help support your sense of purpose in your career?

One of the most important aspects of a career for me, which gives me purpose, is making a positive impact. At Capgemini, there are so many opportunities to do that, whether it be by solving client problems, building solutions for people, making people’s work easier by automating manual processes, organising events that celebrate diversity and inclusion, or contributing to the work of the Social Innovators.

What have you gained from working at Capgemini from a career perspective?

I have gained a far better understanding of the technology landscape and what the world could look like in the near future. I’ve also been able to develop skills in areas of interest to me, specifically in automation, data science, and AI. Non-career wise: The most valuable thing I have gained from working at Capgemini is the friendships.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe Capgemini as an employer?

Supportive, collaborative, fun

If you could give 3 pieces of advice to students about applying for a job what would they be?

In my personal opinion, one very important part of job applications is to ensure that you are applying to jobs or embarking on a career that you actually want to have, not just jobs you want in order to have a job. If you want to have the job, your application will be more authentic and likely better as a result. If you don’t know whether you want a particular job, research it. Contact people in the same industry or from the particular company you’re considering, and ask them about their experiences. Are they happy? Will you be happy?

I think it’s really important to get feedback from employers if you don’t get a job offer from them. It’s really helpful to get another perspective on how you’re performing and where you could improve, and then make the improvement, so that you can increase your odds of getting an offer for the next job you apply for.

When you’re writing your application, make sure you be honest about what it is you want and are interested in. If a job isn’t a good fit for you in terms of values, culture or work, then it’s better in the long-run to be rejected than to be accepted and unhappy. There are jobs that fit better with your goals and personality than others, and if you are not pretending to be anything other than yourself, you have a better chance of getting these jobs.
