Design principles for digital happiness

Building Sustainable innovation requires rethinking the way we design and deploy IT solutions.

Professor Rafael Calvo defines seven design principles for what he calls “Positive Computing”. If we’re going to design user-centric systems, then we need to focus on principles like compassion, empathy, meaning, competence, autonomy, fun and flow.

Further pointers toward user-centric AI come through the IEEE’s recently released report on Ethically Aligned Design. This report presents recommendations across a range of key areas, such as data rights, legal frameworks, and policies for education and awareness.
