Involve me, and I will understand.” With this lesson from Confucius, we embarked on our journey of using the SAP Model Company approach in SAP implementation projects and learned many valuable lessons along the way. SAP Model Company is one of the many accelerators to expedite implementation projects – but with a difference. Unlike SAP best-practices content, which any customer can download free of cost and implement without actively engaging with SAP, with SAP Model Company, SAP becomes a key stakeholder in the implementation project.
Built on top of best-practices content, including deep industry, line-of-business processes, solutions, configurations, with innovations and other peripheral solutions required to operate the business, SAP Model Company goes beyond the SAP S/4HANA digital core and provides complete end-to-end solutions, as required.
SAP Model Company is a service offering and comprises of pre-packaged, assembled-to-order, end-to-end industry, or line-of-business standard solutions with SAP’s Value Assurance delivered as an appliance. In the explore or design phase of the implementation project, SAP supports setting up a sandbox with the requisite SAP Model Company for the customer. This sandbox is used in the process workshops with customer and helps in identifying backlogs.
Cost vs benefits
While customers may have found SAP best practices faster, cheaper, and more suitable for their requirements in the past, it is important to see SAP Model Company in the context and value it delivers to customers.
Historically, SAP implementations were expensive propositions for any customer, both in terms of time and cost. The average implementation time for medium and large enterprises anywhere between three to five years. The “new” SAP we see is resolutely moving towards a significant reduction of 30–50% faster implementation cycle with SAP Model Company. Reducing bespoke and increasing standardization with SAP Model Company has a direct impact on operational expenses.
In the end, it boils down to advantages vs costs of the SAP Model Company approach for a customer. There is no “one-size-fits-all” or magic SAP Model Company approach. The applicability needs to be evaluated in the context of each customer. There are many customers who are convinced about the benefits of the SAP Model Company approach and are actively seeking information to find out whether a specific SAP Model Company approach suits their requirements.
