Smart supply chain in the intelligent enterprise

Publish date:

It’s time for a reset; to achieve transparency across all business functions related to supply chain and strive for a unified supply chain platform for planning and execution.

Clients in today’s world demand transparency from the companies they deal with, but is transparency also within the companies themselves? Due to these requirements from the market, new business processes like Sales and Operations Planning have been implemented in recent years. In many cases, this has led to a myriad of tools and IT systems that served the purpose, leading to a Gordian knot of applications. Master and process data has to be synchronized along these systems and data hubs with complex reporting tools. Giving this transparency to the separate business functions does not mean that the supply chain planning and operations processes will work like a Swiss clock.

These steps toward the digital supply chain are hampering the adoption of innovations in the area of IoT, Blockchain, AI, and RPA. Things are getting worse even as new systems and processes are added to the scattered IT landscape and IT architects try to solve them with the tools already in place.

It’s time for a reset; to achieve transparency across all business functions related to supply chain and strive for a unified supply chain platform for planning and execution. Integration of the S&OP, demand and supply planning, and financial planning processes is key to serving the markets and adopting the innovations that will make all the difference in the next years. The tools to support these are available on the market with SAP S/4HANA, IBP, and SAP Leonardo, and the transformation roadmap can be made with the Smart Planning framework of Capgemini. We have successfully used this framework in the CPG, high-tech and process industries, among others.

In applying industry best practices to supply chain with Smart planning, companies can move to a unified supply chain platform and integrate it with the new digital core of SAP S/4HANA. This covers all processes, reports and metrics to enable transparency, real-time insights and business functions with simpler and faster processes.

Using the smart planning framework with the capabilities of SAP IBP, we have seen planning cycle times decrease from days to hours. If you are interested in what Capgemini can offer your business, please contact me: Jan.Wouters@Capgemini.com.
