World Quality Report 2016-2017: Focus on Southern Europe

On September 14, 2016, Capgemini, Sogeti and HPE released the World Quality Report (eighth edition). This report examines the state of application quality and testing practices across multiple industries and 32 countries.

With an increase of 75% in interviews to the testing leaders in Southern Europe (Italy, Portugal and Spain), for the first time, we had enough data to elaborate a specific pullout with a vision of QA and Testing function in these countries.

I was honored to be one of the contributors to this vision, so in this blog I will elaborate its main findings.

Three main findings at a global level

The World Quality Report 2016-2017 reveals that over two-thirds (68%) of organizations for which IoT products are an important part of business operations do not possess a specific test strategy for this IT aspect.

The report also noted a clear increase in the adoption of machine-based intelligence to help drive efficiency and cost savings for QA and Testing.

Finally, adoption rates have increased for both agile and DevOps, but companies are currently involved with the difficulty to break down business and IT silos and to build a real and strong collaboration, so to reach all the expected benefits while mitigating the business risks.

What about Southern Europe?

QA and Testing in Southern Europe has reached a pivotal point in the adoption of trending techniques such as digitalization, agile and DevOps.

The share of QA and Testing in the overall IT budget is around 28% (three percentage points below the worldwide average), but IT leaders expect it to rise to 39% by 2020.

In some transformational projects, there is already the emerging perception of IT as both supporting the business and being the business itself. As such, the enormous interest in agile and DevOps – valid approaches for the organization – focuses on smaller and more iterative initiatives. This brings the need to move from independent test teams (valid for large and multi-year projects) to an independency in the mind with a clear segregation of duty.

Due to new integration needs stemming from cloud computing, APIs and the services from existing catalogues, non-functional requirements testing, with a special focus on security, has become a crucial element in the mind of IT leaders in these countries. The real challenge lies in the lack of skilled manpower to manage these aspects.

In Southern Europe, test automation practices and an optimized approach to test environment and data still have a long way to go.

About TCOE (Testing Center of Excellence), there are different approaches, including hybrid, centralized, and in-source testing.

In conclusion, while these countries clearly suffer a delay in the acquisition of new approaches, we can expect, in the next years, a large revamp for QA and Testing in Southern Europe into a more competent and sophisticated function.
