Transportation is becoming a more and more important aspect of supply chain management. Transportation is a vital element to successfully fulfil customer orders.

At the same time, managing transportation has become more complex. Capacity is limited and, with emerging markets in Asia, there are serious imbalances in deep sea transport. Congestion on roads, at ports - seaports and airports - makes ‘estimated arrival times’ worthless. Airports are reaching the capacity limit that is socially acceptable, due to sound and other environmental pollution. Rising fuel and other costs have caused transportation costs to take a larger part in the total supply chain costs. Recent changes to road taxes and truck safety costs have added to this. In summary, transportation is on the agenda of the today’s supply chain manager more than it has ever been before.
