European mobile operators are under pressure to combat slow revenue growth in the face of saturation in the mobile market and declining voice prices.  Growth in voice revenues fell from 15.3% in Q2 2005 to 10.4% in Q4 2006, while growth in data revenues fell from 5.2% to 2.2% in the same period.  ARPU (average revenue per user) are showing little growth.

Operators are betting on mobile data services to drive revenues. However, in light of declining SMS revenue prospects and low uptake of mobile Internet and MMS, operators are looking at new and compelling services.

The latest Point of View by the TME Lab presents an analysis of whether IM could be an application that can gain popularity in the mobile platform, after its success on the fixed internet.
