Open Standards: A complex set of different definitions with one common aim.

One of the driving forces of change for both business and technology has been
the increasing shift towards adopting “Open Standards”; however, although the
term is used with increasing frequency, few people actually understand what it
really means. Both “Open” and “Standard” have individual meanings within the IT
industry, with “Open” usually meaning “royalty free,” and “Standard” referring
to something a formal committee has produced for use by its members.
