Over the last few years we have seen the buzz around Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) build to a fever pitch. Vendors and analysts are all claiming that the technology will deliver solutions to many of the problems currently plaguing companies. If we are to believe the hype then SOA will deliver more efficient, flexible and agile solutions; faster and cheaper than is possible with more conventional tools and techniques.

The question at the front of everyone’s mind is just how SOA will deliver these benefits when other similar technologies have failed in the past. What is SOA doing that is different from before which will enable it to succeed?
