Capgemini delivered a Java-based web solution that allowed the company to quickly deploy a strategies to support its business needs across a global supply chain.
The challenge
The client faced the challenge of finding a way to better manage the flow of dependent demand information between its 26 globally dispersed manufacturing sites, while improving the accuracy and timeliness of its materials requirements forecasts. The legacy solution was non-year 2000 compliant and did not provide the functionality or flexibility to support a reengineered business process.
The client was faced with the following challenges:
- Replacing a non-Year 2000 compliant legacy application before it failed
- Linking disparate planning systems with a solution that supported a reengineered business process
- Rapid deployment of a global solution with minimal time and effort
Capgemini approach
Capgemini was engaged to deliver a Java-based Web solution that would enable the company to quickly deploy a solution to support its business needs across a global supply chain. We used a proprietary development methodology combined with our dedicated development facility, the Accelerated Delivery Environment. The object-oriented solution was developed using Java and Web technologies. Heterogeneous clients used a Web browser to download Java applets, which then accessed an Oracle database. The team used the following five iterations with key business and technical resources to drive out the solution:
- Navigation Iteration - Initial user interface design
- Vertical Slice Iteration - Architectural proof of concept
- Functional Iteration - Initial release of core functionality
- 1st Release - Base functionality required to support business process
- 2nd Release - Additional functionality
Value delivered
The company received a globally deployable solution that met its business needs in a compressed timeframe of 10 weeks - a significant decrease in time as compared to the company’s traditional methods of development. The solution has been deployed to the majority of manufacturing facilities worldwide with enthusiastic acceptance.
