Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Portugal (CGE&Y) in partnership with Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Micromuse Inc. (NASDAQ: MUSEE) successfully achieved the implementation of the network management technology CIC/Netcool at Cabovisão, the only private telecommunication operator in Portugal that has its own network of optical fiber and Coaxial cable. With this solution the operator can manage its complete portfolio of services including fixed phone, broadband Internet and data and TV transmission, for private and business customers.

The system provided by CGE&Y it the first of its kind to be implemented in Portugal, enabling Cabovisão to manage its network efficiently and measure the client’s perception of the quality of service provided. As Cabovisão is the only Portuguese triple-play operator, with most of its services supported by IP technology, the system provided by CGE&Y offers innovative solutions like a simulation of customer’s behavior anywhere on the network in order to detect network problems before the end client notices an eventual service failure. This guarantees a high level of client satisfaction.

“As the second largest Portuguese operator for cable TV, fixed telephone and broadband internet, we want to offer an excellent level of service to our customers. Thanks to the solution implemented by CGE&Y, we can manage our network more efficiently as we have real time information about the whole network, on a unique platform”, said Jorge Ferreira, Network Operations Director from Cabovisão. “We trusted CGE&Y and its partners Cisco and Micromuse, and the project outcome proved we were right: it was achieved with a high level of quality and compliance to deadlines”.

The system was implemented in the Network Operations Center (NOC) of Cabovisão in Palmela, where hundreds of thousand alarms are received every day from all over the network. Using logical association, correlation and deletion of alarms, the system enables for problems and deteriorations to be shown in a unique console of the NOC. From this console, technicians can easily investigate the problem’s origin and solve failures.

“This solution enables Cabovisão to take maximum advantage of the network capacity, thus improving the quality of service” , asserts Carlos Rydin, Principal of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Portugal. “It is the only operator in Portugal that actually uses a business model based on triple-play and voice over IP”.

“I am glad to announce one more client on the national market” explains Alejandro Mexcua, Regional Sales Director for Micromuse Southern Europe. “Knowing the size of Cabovisão, this client is most relevant to us. Above all, it shows that the quality and relevancy of our solutions have a real impact on network management and, in the medium term, on the global management of a company with, as a consequence, a cost reduction”.

According to Nuno Ferraz de Carvalho, Service Providers Regional Sales Manager for Cisco PortugalWith its quality of service and the control of operational costs, this project consolidated the relationship between Cabovisão and an ecosystem of partners in which Cisco played an essential role .”

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Portugal was not only responsible for the implementation of the CIC/Netcool solution but also for the training of Cabovisão’s technicians incharged with this area.
