The paper focuses on mesh networks, assessing the disruptive potential of the technology. Mesh networks are peer-to-peer communication networks that allow two user devices to communicate directly, instead of being routed through a central switch.
- Analyses what makes mesh networks disruptive, i.e. the benefits that meshes can bring to both end users and greenfield operators.
- Shows the current deployments by greenfield operators, such as Qware Systems and community-based network players, such as local authorities in the US and Asia.
- Assesses the likelihood of this technology becoming mainstream by looking at its partner ecosystem, standards and regulation, security issues and technological problems.
- Analyses the impact this technology is likely to have on incumbents, in both medium and long term, and how the incumbents can face up to the challenge.
