Leveraging Technology to Enhance Store Operations

Featured Success Story

Albert Heijn

Retailer Albert Heijn collaborated with Capgemini, SRC and Microsoft on an automated data management solution designed to improve data accuracy as a critical step to realize full benefits of Global Data Synchronization.

Using our Retail Transformation methodology and our ERS framework Capgemini helps retailers make the most of today’s advanced store technology to achieve significant operational improvements.

Extended Retail Solutions (ERS) is a joint initiative from Capgemini, Intel and Microsoft. ERS is designed to transform the way retailers operate their stores, manage their supply chain and promote products to their customers through the use of technology and an open-standards approach to increase sales and lower the retailer’s total cost of ownership.

ERS addresses business challenges and issues in key areas such as store operations, promotions management and replenishment. The ERS framework supports and hosts a selection of retail solution providers that bring thought leadership and innovative answers to specific business areas.

Business Opportunities Enabled through Technology

ERS focuses on the following key business opportunities for retailers:

  • Point-of-Sale (POS): The extension of services to back-office processes via the point where services and customers converge offers untapped opportunities for improved performance.
  • Workforce Management: Web-enabled solutions together with new planning and scheduling engines provide exciting opportunities for retailers to optimize their number one asset; store staff.
  • Retail Media Networks: RMNs offer consumers on-demand, interactive, rich-media information and enable retailers and manufacturers to reach the consumer while they are in the store and in the buying mode.
  • In-Store Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): The business case for SKU-level RFID tagging is already working well in the fashion and apparel segment. Capgemini’s demonstrator offers proof that 100% read rates can be achieved in a real-life environment.
  • Global Data Synchronization (GDS): Global Data Synchronization (GDS) facilitates collaboration between retailers and manufacturers through the adoption of global trading standards. Complying with global standards can generate supply chain savings and productivity improvements for both parties.

Store Technology Solutions in Action

Capgemini worked with Vodafone to decommission five legacy systems in 12 months by deploying new EPOS systems. The company now has the visibility of real-time management information through various media channels driving increased sales and reduced fraud.

In another example, a complete revamp of in-store technology featuring a customized electronic point-of-sale system has helped leading UK retailer Matalan provide better customer service and faster checkout times.

And Capgemini and its ERS partners worked with Finland-based Rautakirja Oy’s Kiosk Operations (R- Kioski) division to implement a POS solution designed to improve customer service, enable the sale of new types of products and enhance supply chain operations.
