Half of all vehicle breakdowns are caused by electrics/electronics (E/E) problems.

Half of all vehicle breakdowns are caused by electrics/electronics (E/E) problems. Integrating the management of E/E and in-vehicle software across the entire product lifecycle can help automotive companies handle complexity better.

Capgemini has implemented projects for a variety of vehicle manufacturers focusing on the optimization of E/E management, including software logistics, communication database and compatibility management.

A Successful Approach to E/E PLM Integration

E/E PLM Integration involves the optimization of both E/E processes and the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system landscape. This should include a holistic consideration of all the relevant processes, both in the E/E and mechanical fields, and, as far as E/E is concerned, all the processes involved from development through to aftersales. The approach consists of a multi-step process:

  • Analysis: Detailed analysis of E/E processes (including E/E configuration management, E/E test management, E/E change management, E/E requirements management), as well as an outline analysis of the PLM processes and the application landscape.
  • Optimization of E/E processes: Establish optimal processes, with optimal IT support. This involves a vehicle manufacturer’s core processes. These are manufacturer-dependent and there is no standard solution.
  • Optimization of the PLM system landscape: Includes the implementation of innovative concepts such as Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Sustainability should be a key consideration.
  • Development and integration of E/E PLM: The best solution will vary depending on the company, but should incorporate standard products where it makes sense, as well as solutions specifically developed for the organisation.
  • Rollout: Rollout of processes and IT must be coordinated. Acceptance within the company is crucial; this step must not be neglected and should include training and support.

Benefits Include Cost Savings and Increased Turnover

E/E PLM Integration provides both direct and indirect benefits for automotive companies:

  • Directly helps reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Directly helps reduce service costs.
  • Directly helps to increase.
  • Helps improve data quality.
  • Helps improve product quality.
  • Helps reduce development times.
