I just read an interesting article on some design thoughts on why getting rid of the tabs in Firefox 3.2. You can read it here but the most interesting part of the article that triggered me to write this post is: “A full screen modus, where the useless top menu disappears and the browser becomes what it is: A new OS layer.” So let’s hold on to that thought, add this one: “some laptops can boot directly in multi media center mode without the need of an actual OS like Windows” and this one: “more and more people use netbooks to use web-based applications”. To make it a bit more explicit (just for the sake of writing, not because I might doubt that some didn’t get it): wouldn’t it be cool to have an ultra light netbook that boots directly in Firefox? No hard drive but flash storage, built-in 3G chip, super long lasting battery and charging through standard mini-usb connector. Who could offer this? Google maybe? To run their Google Apps and the rest of the internet, teaming together with a telco for the 3G connectivity. I would buy one. --- Lee Provoost is a Cloud Computing Strategist and ERP+ lead at Capgemini. You can follow his ongoing stream of thoughts on Twitter http://twitter.com/leeprovoost.

Lee,
You might want to check out the gOS and gOS Cloud System:

A promising development I'm following very closely since Sommer last year.
Just one advise. DO NOT TRY IT OUT!!! Otherwise you will loath our corporate "Snail" Vista-PCs ( http://tolido.blogspot.com/2009/01/youve-got-mail-almost.html ) even more ;-)

You also may need something like webmin, so you can access essential configuration settings such as network connection management. Until that gets included as a FF extension...
But the whole caboodle may fit in less than 32 MB, which can be copied to RAM and will run really fast.

@Max so looking at the GooOS thingy, perhaps Google could make netbooks that boot directly in Chrome and host most of the OS stuff in the cloud... Thus creating kind of dumb terminals and throwing us back to the mainframe era :-D L'histoire se repete (sorry don't know how to get the proper French e's on a Dutch keyboard)
@Andrew hmm true, didn't think about wlan settings etc. on the other hand. let's say you have an always on, unlimted 3G (HSDPA for instance) connection, you don't need these settings either. make it as much fool/dumb proof as possible.

@ron hmm this shows how reality can sometimes be further than our imagination... good find ron, thanks! i also have another fantasy about laptop batteries that last a week and wireless electricity...
The current netbooks run ultralight, linuxbased OSes such as Xandros. They boot in mere seconds. And the Xandros desktop is fused together with Webkit, allowing you to run web apps right on the desktop. The Gecko engine of firefox isn't light enough to do this as it seems. From what I hear/read, Webkit is faster and has a smaller footprint than Gecko, and is already being used in many portable devices such as the iPhone and a range of Nokia phones (Nokia bought Trolltech a while ago, and they have integrated Webkit with their QT technology).
It good info that we know firefox is one of big browser. I hope that firefox could make browsing with netbook easier and faster. Huge Real Estate
